Two legends of Australian sport came together in the creation of this superb piece, commemorating the magnificent victories of Australia in the 1999 Rugby World Cup and 1999 Cricket World Cup.
On 6 November 1999, Australia defeated France 35-12 to win the fourth RWC. They had defeated South Africa in the semi-final and Wales in the quarter-final along their way to a superb victory in a tournament held in Wales.
John Eales remains the most successful captain in the history of Australian rugby. In 1999, he became one of the first players to win multiple Rugby World Cups.
The 1999 Cricket World Cup was won by Australia, who beat Pakistan by 8 wickets in the final at Lord's Cricket Ground in London. Australia had beaten India and Zimbabwe in the "Super 6" preliminary finals before playing one of the most-remembered ODI matches of all time in defeating South Africa in the semi-final.
Steve Waugh captained the Australian Test cricket team from 1999 to 2004, and was the most capped Test cricket player in history, with 168 appearances, until Sachin Tendulkar of India broke this record in 2010. He is one of only 11 players to have scored over 10,000 Test runs, led Australia to fifteen of their record sixteen consecutive Test wins, and to victory in the 1999 Cricket World Cup. He was named Australian of the Year in 2004 for his philanthropic work, and inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in front of his home fans at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2010.
