Archer claimed the first Melbourne Cup in 1861 that and the same race the subsequent year by a record margin of eight lengths (later matched by Rain Lover). The horse would have competed again in 1863, but the trainer’s telegraphed acceptance form arrived late and Archer was scratched on a technicality.

This is just one of many, many stories that combined tell the story behind Australia’s richest horse race. This premium print tells the story of many of them on an archival quality print.
