Many aspire to greatness but precious few achieve it. In cricket, one of the yardsticks is the accumulation of runs, the ability to turn out time again and again to “produce the goods” with regularity and certainty.
At the crest are three Australians, all naturally gifted players, who have not only been prodigious talents but have earned the ultimate honour by being awarded the captaincy of their country.
Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting are among the sport’s top ten run scorers, which is testimony to their skill, dogged determination, persistence and grit, they are the only three Australian’s to surpass 10,000 Test runs.
Allan Border
A resolute left handed batsman. Border’s persistence at a difficult time in Australian cricket became his calling card as he helped rebuild a side that learned to conquer the best. When it came to setting benchmarks, Border was a master for during his time world records became almost commonplace. AB amassed a then world record 11,174 runs, he played in 156 Tests, 153 of those consecutively (still a record). He batted in more Test match innings than any other player – 265 in all. Border compiled the most Test scores between 50 and 100 (63) and the most scores of at least 50 (93). It is a measure of his importance to the game that the Australian Player of the Year now receives the highly coveted Allan Border Medal.
Stephen Waugh
The most capped Test player in history, Waugh was a batter of enormous talent and composure – a magnificent sight at his confident best. Waugh had a remarkable ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations. He also scored 31 centuries and 50 half centuries in his 260 innings and 168 matches, with a Test average of 51.06. As captain, Waugh had few peers. He turned an already successful side into one of the best of all time – with a number of stalwarts ranking it alongside Sir Donald Bradman’s 1948 Invincibles and the West Indian teams of the 1980s. Waugh captained the side on 57 occasions and during his career scored more than 150 runs in an inning against each Test playing nation.
Ricky Ponting
Considered one of the best cricketers of the modern era, “Punter” scored his 10,000th Test run against the West Indies in Antigua in 2008, making him the third fastest of all time to reach the milestone. His highest score of 257 came against India in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG in 2003 and at this point he is one of only three Australians to have scored four double centuries (the others being Don Bradman and Greg Chappell). Ponting holds the Australian record for the most Test runs in a calendar year (1,544 in 2005), the most Test centuries in a calendar year by an Aussie (seven in 2006), the most Test centuries by an Australian and the most runs made on Aussie soil.
